What is Managed XDR, and how is it different from a managed SOC?

If you’ve started looking into round-the-clock security monitoring, you’ll have met a wall of acronyms. SOC, SIEM, EDR, MDR, XDR. They overlap, vendors use them differently, and it’s hard to know what you’re actually buying.

This guide explains what Managed XDR is, how it relates to a managed SOC, and how to decide what your organisation needs.

Start with the SOC

A Security Operations Centre (SOC) is a team of analysts who monitor an organisation’s systems, investigate alerts and respond to threats. Large enterprises sometimes build their own. Most organisations can’t justify the cost of staffing one 24 hours a day, so they use a managed SOC, where a specialist provider does the monitoring for them.

A SOC is the people and processes. What matters just as much is the technology they work with, because analysts can only respond to what they can see.

So what is XDR?

XDR stands for Extended Detection and Response. It brings together signals from across your environment, including endpoints, email, identity, network and cloud, into a single view.

That matters because modern attacks rarely stay in one place. A phishing email leads to a stolen password, which leads to a suspicious login, which leads to unusual activity on a server. Viewed separately, each signal might look minor. Correlated together, they tell a clear story.

Good XDR also uses behavioural analytics to learn what normal looks like for your users and systems. That makes it far better at spotting things that don’t match a known signature, such as a legitimate account being misused.

Managed XDR: technology plus people

Managed XDR combines the two. You get the XDR platform and an expert team watching it around the clock, investigating what it finds and acting quickly when something is wrong.

In practice, that means:

  • 24/7 monitoring across your endpoints, email, identities and cloud services.
  • Threat investigation by analysts who separate real attacks from noise.
  • Rapid response, such as isolating a compromised device or disabling a hijacked account, often within minutes.
  • Clear reporting, so you understand what happened and what’s being done about it.

Managed XDR or managed SOC?

For most organisations, the honest answer is that a modern managed SOC service should be built on XDR. When you compare providers, look past the label and ask:

  • What can your analysts actually see across my environment?
  • How quickly do you respond, and what are you authorised to do without waiting for me?
  • How do you reduce false positives so my team isn’t overwhelmed?
  • What does reporting look like for my board?

Questions to ask before you choose a provider

Managed detection and response is a long-term relationship, so it pays to look beyond the brochure. When comparing providers, ask:

  • What does onboarding involve, and how long does it take? A clear plan with named contacts is a good sign.
  • Which of our systems will you monitor? Endpoints alone aren’t enough. Look for visibility across identities, email and cloud services too.
  • What can you do without waiting for us? Agree in advance which actions the provider can take immediately, such as isolating a device or disabling an account, and which need your approval.
  • How do you tune out the noise? A good service learns your environment over time, so your team only hears about what genuinely matters.
  • Who will we actually speak to? Named contacts who understand your business make a big difference when something goes wrong.
  • What does reporting look like? You’ll want clear, regular summaries for IT and for leadership.

It’s also worth asking how the service works with your existing tools. If you already use Microsoft security products, for example, a provider that integrates deeply with them can help you get far more value from what you already pay for.

Who needs it?

If your organisation can’t watch for threats outside office hours, or relies on a small IT team that’s already stretched, managed detection and response closes a dangerous gap. Attackers often strike at night, at weekends and over bank holidays, precisely because they expect nobody to be looking.

CyberQ’s Managed XDR gives you a managed SOC service with 24/7 visibility and rapid response, without the cost of building one in-house. Book a demo to see it in action.
